Amateur Tip Of The Week: Greenside Goals
- Updated: November 17, 2021
Here’s a scenario for you. You’re out on the golf course making your way through your round.
You’re riding in a cart because you know you need to allocate all your physical exertion to your golf shots.
You missed the green with your approach. Maybe it was your second shot, maybe it was your fifth. It doesn’t matter.
What matters is what you do next.
As you pull your cart up to the greenside parking area, what are you pulling from your bag?
If your answer is any fewer than two clubs in addition to your putter, then we’ve got some bad news for you.
You either A: don’t care about your score on this hole, or B: have an unfathomable lack of versatility around the greens.
The only time a single wedge should come out of the bag is if the cart is parked right next to the ball because the proper decision can’t be made without first assessing the lie and the landing area.
If you’re committing to a shot before you pull a club then there’s a good chance that’s the only one you’ve got.
Decide what shot is required.
Are you going to play the chunk and run or the low checker? Will it be the flop shot or the hooded wedge?
Maybe you want to play the high-risk, high reward bladed wedge into the top of the flagstick that drops down a foot away from the cup.
The point is, you don’t know until you get up there and check it out.
So next time you’re in a greenside predicament, bring more than one club. This way you at least look like you know what you’re doing.
