The Real Reason Why DJ Switched Putters 15 Minutes Before His Second Round 63 At The WGC-HSBC Champions

Dustin Johnson is picking up right where he left off last month season by sitting atop the leaderboard at the WGC-HSBC Champions in China after firing a second round 63, which included EIGHT BIRDIES IN HIS LAST 11 HOLES.

Afterward, DJ credited his team at TaylorMade for making it possible considering he accidentally left his putter at his rental house and was unable to retrieve it before the round.

“I don’t know man, I got to the putting green this morning and was like, ‘crap, I forgot my putter,'” the current World No. 1 said. “So, I let the guys know I needed a one because I was teeing off in 15 minutes.”

What he was handed was a [TaylorMade] Spider, similar to the one he typically plays, but with a different metal insert. “I hit a couple putts and couldn’t tell the difference, so I said to myself ‘f it,’ I’ll throw it in the bag and see what happens.” Nine birdies and zero bogeys later, it appeared to be the right decision.

When asked if he like his chances this weekend, Johnson replied dead seriously, “Dude, I’m just trying not to forget my flat stick tomorrow.”

The rest of the field begs to differ!

(Editor’s note: contents of this story are slightly fabricated … but DJ really did get a new putter 15 minutes before the round … and he did shoot 63)
