7 Super Simple New Year’s Golf Resolutions For 2022

The calendar may say January, but for us true players it’s springtime in our minds. Before we know it, the season will be in full swing.

So let’s take this downtime to set some goals for ourselves in the new year.

We put together some of our aspirations for the coming year that can help you no matter what your skill level.

Whether you’re trying to break par or make it through the round on a single box of balls, start applying these to your game and you won’t regret it.

1. Practice your short game

Next time you head over to the course for a grueling practice session, consider saving yourself the $6 on the small bucket and head to the practice green instead.

Chances are, no matter how many balls you hit on the range, you’re still going to miss a lot of greens.

Probably most of them. Your makeable putts are going to be for pars and bogeys and will rely on your chipping to get you a good look. Learn how to use all your wedges to play different shots around the greens.

Practice not 3 putting. Work on those 3 footers so you can say no next time your opponent with the yips offers ‘good, good.’

At the end of the day, it’s more satisfying to walk off the course knowing you turned a 90 into an 85 because of your short game than a 90 into a 100 because of a lack thereof.

2. Always be a hero

Don’t punch out unless you drove it into a portapotty and the only way out is the door.

Pop it through a 3-foot gap in the trees.  Attempt that 40-yard slice 3 feet off the ground. Take 3 wood from 300 yards out of the bunker.

If you play like we do, the reward is far greater than the risk. Walking up to the green knowing that you just pulled off a shot that Phil may have twice about is an extremely satisfying feeling.

3. Walk it in

The only thing more satisfying than making a putt is starting to walk after it 4 feet before it drops.

This is a serious power move if you’re playing a match. The early walk sends a clear message that even though you missed your last two 3-footers, you know it’s dropping as soon as it leaves the face.

If you really want to get nuts you can throw in a putter raise, a point, or just lock eyes with your opponent as you’re walking.

Sure, you’ll have some explaining to do if it doesn’t go in, but in our opinion, the reward far outweighs the risk.

4. Let the Expletives Fly

Unless you’re shooting 10 under every time you go out, there is surely at least one shot where your frustration should all come out.

There is nothing wrong with this. Bottling up the anger will only make it worse.

If you miss a three-footer, you damn well better be dropping some F-bombs that can be heard by the group on the next green. Serenity now!

5. Circle your birdies and don’t square your bogeys

The circles in conjunction with squares make sense on a pro’s scorecard. They work together to help tell a story of good vs bad in a round.

However, we aren’t pros, and when we’re trying to fit 4 squares around that 9 on the par 5 third we run out of space pretty quickly. Instead, treat every non-birdie as just another number.

But the birdies must be called out. Circle them. Bold them. Cherish them. Because you never know when the next one will be.

6. Don’t warm up on the driving range

Instead, warm up with a couple of beers.

Maybe bring them to the practice green and hit some one-handed putts. Physically loosening up is overrated.

Loosening up mentally is absolutely invaluable.

7. Consider walking

Now it’s understandable that this isn’t feasible on all courses. Nobody wants to be walking a quarter-mile between holes on a course that randomly twists and turns through a housing development.

But if you’re lucky enough to play at a course that is conducive to walking, you should absolutely do it.

If you’re someone who takes a cart all the time, this will offer a completely different point of view.

As you stroll from tee to green, take in all the sights, sounds, the smells. Feel the terrain under your feet and the breeze against your skin. Enjoy the walk. It’s a beautiful thing.

You may even find that it engages you more in the round and leads to favorable results on the scorecard.
