Adam Scott Keeps It Real: ‘Long Means Nothing To Us’

Adam Scott Driver Comments @GolfAust

Adam Scott let his comments fly after the third round of the BMW Championship explaining that tour pros will light up any soft golf course, no matter how long it is.

The main issue is how easy it is to bomb it with today’s technology. If we’re being totally honest and we’re able to look past his chiseled bone structure, he’s not wrong.

Think about this for a second – YOU CAN’T BUILD IT LONG ENOUGH. So cocky. So true. Pros couldn’t care less about length. Most can carry driver over 300 yards. They also don’t see a 500+ yard par-4 and say to themselves “this is long so I need to swing harder.”

It’s the same process, same routine, same swing, over and over again. Just with more or less club. They don’t dread hitting a longer club like most amateurs. Plus with the course being wet, the fairways become even wider since there’s less roll.

According to Evin Priest of the Australian Associated Press, Scott clarified his comments:

“And I’m not challenging (PGA Tour officials and course designers) to build longer golf courses; I’m challenging them to build smarter golf courses.”

“If you require us to shape tee shots to get it in play we’re going to struggle. (Now) we just play straight, everything is straight. While there is an option to go over trees and over bunkers, it is just relentless.”

He’s literally telling the powers that be what to do. He says most pros would struggle if they were forced to work the ball. So do something about it! Granted if you put putter in Adam Scott’s hand more often, he’d struggle regardless.

Smarter golf courses? What a novel idea. Use the land instead of buying more of it. Take driver out of these guys’ hands more often. Plant a giant tree in front of the tee box so they don’t cut a corner and make a long 480-yard dogleg left par-4 look like a pitch and putt. Sure, that’s probably not the greatest solution, but do something as opposed to building a 15K yard golf course.

He also mentioned it’s taking the skill out of driving the golf ball, a skill that was revered by the game’s greatest players back in the day. Jack hit it 300 with persimmon woods and balata ball. He was rewarded with winning 18 majors.

“The driver is the most forgiving club in the bag now; it’s just swing as hard as you can and get it down there far. It’s not a skillful part of the game anymore and it’s really unfair for some guys who are great drivers of the golf ball. I don’t think their talents are showing up as much as they should.”

Again, Scott’s not wrong. We just wish he’d learn how to putt with a 35″ putter!
