Backyard Goals: Soccer Star Gareth Bale’s 17th @ TPC Sawgrass

The SunGareth Bale has taken his love for golf to another level by having a replica of Sawgrass’ iconic 17th hole built in his back garden. The Real Madrid footballer is a keen golfer, and could well be planning for his career after football by getting regular practice in.

Back in 2015, the former Spurs winger set out plans to build three replica hole from the world’s most famous golf courses. Sawgrass would be followed by the famous Postage Stamp at Royal Troon and then the tricky 11th at Augusta National.

I don’t even watch much soccer but Gareth Bale may be my new favorite athlete. The Real Madrid winger, who obviously would love to moonlight as a golfer, debuted his brand new backyard masterpiece…the iconic par-3 17th at TPC Sawgrass.

Apparently, this is the first of THREE (!!!) to-scale replica holes he plans on building on his property in South Wales. Let’s be honest, what else is he going to do with that £150 million ($196,770,000 USD) contract he signed last year?!

Even more fascinating is the fact that most rich folks with more money than they know what to do with will install a famous par-3 or a badass practice facility, and call it a day. Not this guy!

While Bale’s plans include two legendary par-3s (also the par-3 8th at Royal Troon)…he’s foregoing the most famous par-3 at Augusta (the 12th aka Golden Bell) and instead is opting for the par-4 11th, one of the toughest holes on the course…Amen!

Of course, this power move got me thinking what three hole’s I’d want in my backyard if land and money (and ocean) were no objects. Sticking with the two 3s and a 4 theme, I’m rolling with:

  • Par-3 12 at Augusta National
  • Par-3 16 at Cypress Point
  • Par-4 8th at Pebble Beach

Hey, a man can dream, right?!
