Breaking Down Ben Hogan’s 1967 Ryder Cup Speech Compared To The Shitshow We Witnessed In Paris
- Updated: October 6, 2018
Team USA didn’t need no stinking Ryder Cup task force back in the day. All they cared about was winning in the simplest form – play well and beat the other team!
After all, it’s golf, not rocket science.
Need evidence? Here’s the speech Captain Hogan gave his players during the 1967 Ryder Cup when it was held at Champions Golf Club in Houston, Texas.

And it paid off as Hogan and the boys dusted Great Britain 23.5-8.5!
Granted this was during a time when it wasn’t all of Europe, just Great Britain, and the US won 14 of the first 17 Ryder Cups, but that’s neither here nor there.
Let’s break it down compared to the shitshow we witnessed in Paris this year:
- “Pairing is really easy” —> Pairing is a science
- Guys who play similar will play together —> Let’s send out Phil in foursomes with Bryson *facepalm*
- “Play your game” —> Don’t mess it up for the country, no pressure.
- “If you don’t like the way they [the uniforms] fit don’t wear them” —> We don’t care if you don’t like them … we need to please our sponsors!
- “I don’t want my name on that trophy as a losing captain” —> We’ll all throw each other under the bus later!
You’d think the US should take a hint or two from this speech heading into 2020, but they probably won’t.
