Tiger Woods & Steve Stricker Named Ryder Cup Vice Captains

U.S. Ryder Cup captain Jim Furyk named Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker as vice captains of a team that’s trying to win on foreign soil for the first time in 25 years. The announcement came on Tuesday at a press conference in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., site of this week’s Honda Classic.

Furyk previously named Davis Love III as his first vice captain earlier on and is expected to name a fourth before the biennial matches begin in France this September.

If the names sound familiar, they should be … not just because Tiger is arguably the GOAT. Two years ago at Hazeltine, DLIII was captain while Furyk, Stricker, and Woods served as vice captains. Of course Stricker captained the U.S. Presidents Cup squad to a 19-11 romping at Liberty National in 2017.

Clearly, this is a theme from the highly scrutinized task force, and honestly, it’s about damn time there’s some continuity for the stars and stripe … especially after the embarrassment at Gleneagles in 2014.

“This is a great honor for me, and I am once again thrilled to be a vice captain,” Stricker said in a statement. “We plan to keep the momentum and the spirit of Hazeltine alive and channel it to our advantage in Paris.”

As for Woods, he’s still keeping his options of playing open along while assuming the assistant role.

“I am thrilled to once again serve as a Ryder Cup vice captain and I thank Jim for his confidence, friendship and support,” Woods said in a statement. “My goal is to make the team, but whatever happens over the course of this season, I will continue to do what I can to help us keep the cup.”

The Ryder Cup will be held September 28-30 at Le Golf National in Paris. For reference, Team USA hasn’t won in Europe since 1993 at The Belfry in England! 1993!
