Bryson DeChambeau Uses Science To Take Slow Play To Another Level

Bryson DeChambeau Paces Off 70 Yards

Bryson DeChambeau took over 3 minutes to play a 70-yard shot on Friday during the second round of the Nothern Trust. OVER THREE MINUTES! It’s gotta be science!

The video comes from @EPatGolf who witnessed this atrocity first hand and had to cut it off because it was TOO long. Allow us to break it down for you:

It all starts with Bryson picking up a tee meaning he probably got some sort of relief. Then he paces it off while announcers say its a “straight forward shot.” It’s 70 yards! Also, why is he over there on a 311 yard par-4? Like dude, that’s 60 yards offline. Had to be the air density.

Also, note the way he ducks under the rope-like some pretentious hipster doofus. Meanwhile, other players and caddies are watching this bs unfold in front of their very eyes.

He walks all the way to the hole – which is in the back portion of a large putting surface – and about-faces like some sort of loser robot.

He walks back and then HAS TO WAIT for another group to tee off because his ball is on a different hole. Of course, he didn’t factor that one into his scientific equation and wasted 30 seconds of everybody’s valuable time.

He gets back to his ball and we assume he eventually pulled the trigger. Can you imagine pacing off 70 yards on a Saturday morning at the local muni? You’d get your ass kicked for doing something like that!

How is this allowed at the professional level?

Why is he not put on the clock? Why was he not assessed a penalty? He says he walks faster than other players but surprisingly “average walking time” isn’t a stat available on the PGA Tour website.

If you have 40 seconds which is the allotted time recommended by the USGA when you arrive at your ball, pacing off 70 yards shouldn’t exist. Fine him, give him a stroke penalty, dock him points … kick him off the tour. Do something that would make him think twice about taking advantage of the system.

If he’s as smart as he says he is, he’ll learn quickly not to pull this crap if there are actual consequences. But if you do nothing, he’ll continue to contribute to the problem.

But to be clear, we aren’t saying he doesn’t have the right to know the yardage. Just let them use a laser if you know it’s going to cause a 4 group back up. Do you really think pros back in the day would pace off this shot? I’d argue no freaking way. They’d just play the shot by feel. If it looks like 70 yards, it’s 70 yards! They didn’t need the Pythagorean theorem to figure it out.

He still made par, but here’s the kicker, his group played in 4:51 on a sunny day, which included Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Thomas. Guess which one was the slowest?

Yes, it was Bryson.
