Hey Tough Guy. Here’s What Tees You Really Should Be Playing From
- Updated: May 1, 2019
“Let’s play from the tips.” We’ve all been on the first tee and heard some tough guy say it.
But let’s be real for a second. Do you have any business playing from the back tees hungover at 10am on a Saturday when you and your buddies break 80 roughly zero percent of the time? No. You probably don’t.
We came across this tweet of a chart the PGA of America and the USGA put together back during their “Tee It Forward” initiative a few years back. It got us thinking about how useful this information can be to the amateur golfer.
Take a look and ask yourself what tees should I be playing from. Maybe it’s time to check that ego at the door.

300 yards 7,150-7,400 yards
275 yards 6,700-6,900 yards
250 yards 6,200-6,400 yards
225 yards 5,800-6,000 yards
200 yards 5,200-5,400 yards
175 yards 4,400-4,600 yards
150 yards 3,500-3,700 yards
125 yards 2,800-3,000 yards
100 yards 2,100-2,300 yards
Will it make the game more fun when you can reach a par-3 in 1 shot? Will it speed up play? Yes! What a brilliant idea. Not sure why this topic isn’t talked about more often, but it should be.
Please note: just because you admit you don’t hit the ball as long as somebody else doesn’t make you any less of a man. It’s always been about how you use it, especially if you can hit the fairway. Plus why not give yourself every advantage possible.
Golf is hard enough already. Try playing from the right set of tees for your game. You might be surprised how much fun you will have.
