Jordan Spieth Hits Four Trees Enroute To Making Hilarious Quad At Sony Open

When amateurs make a quad, we’re usually following it up with another one. But when you’re Jordan Spieth and you make a quad, it’s national headlines.

On Thursday during the first round of the Sony Open at Waialae C.C., Spieth had rollercoaster day en route to a -1 69 (nice) carding EIGHT birdies against three bogeys, and a quad … which conveniently we are going to focus on because it looked like something you’d see at your local muni.

Cruising along inside the top five at -4 heading to the 8th hole, his 17th of the day, Spieth pulled his tee shot on the 454-yard par-4 left sending it crashing into the trees. His second shot hit a tree. His third shot hit a tree. His fourth shot – wait for it – also hit a tree. FOUR trees in FOUR shots! Sounds like the last time I teed it up! From there he dumped his fifth in the sand, splashed out and two-putted for the snowman eight. Woof.

It was Spieth’s first quad or worse since round two of last year’s Byron Nelson. Here’s the full play-by-play. Proceed with caution:

  • Shot 1 244 yds to unknown, 199 yds to hole
  • Shot 2 54 ft 0 in. to unknown, 181 yds to hole
  • Shot 3 75 yds to unknown, 106 yds to hole
  • Shot 4 62 ft 8 in. to left rough, 86 yds to hole
  • Shot 5 73 yds to front left greenside bunker, 41 ft 11 in. to hole
  • Shot 6 67 ft 11 in. to green, 28 ft 4 in. to hole
  • Shot 7 putt 26 ft 9 in., 19 in. to hole
  • Shot 8 in the hole
