WATCH: A lesson in managing expectations from a Major Champion
- Updated: May 2, 2020
Next time you get pissed on a golf course over a bad shot, you may want to consider this: YOU ARE NOT A PROFESSIONAL! It’s time for you to start managing your expectations.
Shane Lowry, the reigning British Open champion, posted this hilarious video on social media of what a 6-week layoff will do to a professionals golf game… but more importantly, what can we learn from it?
That’s what 6 weeks off will do to you 🙈 pic.twitter.com/e749Dq56uU

Again, this man is a MAJOR CHAMPION. Lowry has been in quarantine just like all of us during this Coronavirus pandemic and obviously hasn’t put in the practice like he normally does. The results are as relatable as it gets.
Why is this important?
Lowry plays golf for a living. It’s literally his job to practice and play every day. Here he is taking on one of the more challenging pitch shots in the game off a tight lie over a bunker after not touching a club in over a month and a half. He chunks it, dumps it in the bunker, and laughs it off.
Meanwhile, you probably sit in a cubicle behind a computer at a job you hate for 8-12 hours a day, play maybe once a week if you’re lucky, and never practice. Yet you still get pissed off when you hit a shot like this.
The point is, as amateur golfers, we need to do a better job of managing our expectations on the golf course.
We are not pros and the likelihood of us pulling off a good shot is rare in most cases. If you really want to get better at golf and shoot lower scores, strive to hit shots that are good enough.
The “perfect shot” rarely happens for normal people so why expect anything more than mediocrity? Lower your expectations and you’ll rarely – if ever – be disappointed.
