Paddy Harrington Named 2020 European Ryder Cup Captain
- Updated: January 8, 2019
Padraig Harrington was named
While the 3-time major winner started with humbly showing appreciation for the Ryder Cup captaincy, he went a little deeper than you might’ve expected by sharing one of his fears.
[We prefer to read Paddy’s quotes with his Irish accent.]
“Obviously I’m thrilled to be named as the captain for 2020,” Harrington, 47, said during his press conference on Tuesday. “It’s not something I went into lightly. I suppose you could look at this as being a natural progression, you move on from player to vice-captain to captain. But it’s not something that I take on without a certain amount of trepidation.”
When’s the last time you used trepidation in a sentence? Exactly. That’s something a man who endorsed The Golf Swing Shirt says.

“It really came down to whether I wanted to be in the hat and put what is a successful career, put it on the line. Because you are putting it on the line when you become a Ryder Cup captain,” Harrington said. “It is a different element to your career. We know a successful captain is great, and a losing captain, you know, it’s his fault. So I am putting something on the line going out there.”
Paddy is the man. Owning the Ryder Cup captaincy from day 1. Telling it like it is.
People (mostly the media) make a big freaking deal about the captain, but when in reality, it’s the players. Sure he might have something to do with it like pairing the right personalities (or benching the hottest players on your team and sending Phil out in foursomes) etc, but if the players don’t play well, you lose. It’s pretty simple.
However, the captain must go down with the ship and Harrington is man enough to admit it.
“I know we’re going to a new venue. It’s an away match,” Harrington said. “We’re going to have, on average, three more rookies coming into the team and I have to be a part of that team and ensure that I find an edge to make the team perform to the best of their abilities, get the most out of them, and hopefully get a win.”
And yes, this is his him repping The Golf Swing Shirt:
P.S. This dude is good. This video is funny. You should watch it.
The next #RyderCup isn’t for another two years, but there’s already one player lobbying @padraig_h for a captain’s pick.
