We finally get some proper Open weather and we’re going to move up the tee times? Why?!
This is one of the main reasons we love watching links golf. The elements are a defining characteristic of the championship.
The forecast calls for “persistent and occasionally heavy rain” throughout the afternoon and evening. 10-20 mph winds are expected to gust up to 30 mph, with a 40 percent risk of gusts up to 40 mph after 4 p.m. local (11 a.m. ET).
We get the goal is to avoid a Monday finish especially with the risk of balls moving on the green in tropical storm force gusts, but sideways rain is what makes The Open The Open! Did Old Tom Morris know it was going to dump on him the next day? NO!
Seriously. The worst of the weather is being called for late afternoon. What if Shane Lowry, who’s up by 4, is able to get in before it really gets biblical? Is the R&A giving him an advantage?
The past 3 days have been ideal for scoring. Mostly dry with little wind. Don’t get us wrong … just because scores are low, doesn’t mean Portrush hasn’t been a great test thus far. It separated the guys who are playing well this week. (Hey, Rory!)
But can you imagine when it starts pissing sideways and the wind machine is turned on? Hopefully, we get the full Open experience tomorrow and still finish before sunset, because that’s obviously more important than tradition.
The only reason why we don’t get this in Sunday should be because JB Holmes is plumb-bobbing on the tee boxes.
