5 Quick Observations From Day 3 At The Masters

Patrick Reed Masters round 3 Augusta National

Moving day at the Masters did not disappoint. The world’s best took advantage of the wet, calm conditions on Saturday at Augusta National and as expected, they put on a show.

Leaderboard: Patrick Reed (-14), Rory McIlroy (-11), Rickie Fowler (-9), Jon Rahm (-8), Henrik Stenson (-7)

1. Patrick Reed continues to roll

Reed fired a 3rd round 67 (-5) and holds a 3-shot lead over Rory McIlroy heading into Sunday. He filled it up carding 4 birdies as well as 2 spectacular eagles on 13 and 15.

Patrick is now -13 through 3 rounds on the par-5s. The most ever is -15. He still has 4 par-5s left! He’s also trying to become the first man to shoot in the 60s during all 4 rounds of the tournament.

He’s the man to beat. Shhhhhhhhhh!

2. Rory is Rory-ing

Rory McIlroy came out in a popped collar and fired a bogey-free 65 (-7) which included 5 birdies and a chip-in eagle on the par-5 8th.

But it was the par save he made on the famous par-5 13th that could be the moment he looks back on if he slips on the green jacket.

With the rain falling, Rory hooked his 2nd shot into the azaleas to the left of the green. Somehow he found his ball and scrambled to make his 5 from here:

Somewhere, Rich Learner is making an azalea joke that Sergio’s wife probably won’t like.

Rory looks to complete the career grand slam but will need to get through Reed first.

3. The adventures of Phil Mickelson

Phil Mickelson started his Saturday with a triple bogey on the first hole, which included a whiff … a shot we are all too familiar with.

Then Lefty went full FIGJAM when he went driver off the deck on the par-5 8th and rolled it up there to 8 feet.

He went on to hole the eagle putt but ended up shooting a 74 and is +7 for the tournament.

4. The scoring conditions were basically perfect

The weatherman called for 100% chance of rain for Saturday and while it did, the heavy stuff stayed away. Rain showers softened up the course and the wind was down meaning it was green light central for guys to attack the flagsticks. After all, they call it moving day for a reason.

For the first time in Masters history, 3 players shot rounds of 65 (-7) and they were by Rickie, Rory, and Jon Rahm. Tommy Fleetwood ran off 5 straight birdies on the second nine.

There were chip-ins and eagles everywhere you looked. The roars were plentiful and the golf was sensational.

5. Tomorrow is going to be LIT

Sunday at the Masters is special, but this final round has a chance to be one of the greatest ever. Reed and Rory will be in the final group with a green jacket on the line. Rory is playing for the career grand slam. Reed doesn’t care.

This is just a preview:

Here are some of the other tasty pairings to look forward to:

Rickie/Rahm

Stenson/Fleetwood

JT/Spieth

Rose/Oosthuizen
