Breakfast Ball: 3 Mulligans From The 2021 WGC FedEx-St. Jude

Here are 3 things from the WGC FedEx-St. Jude Invitational we saw which caught our attention. We’re sure the players themselves would like to have these back too!

On the Clock

This weekend at the WGC FedEx-St. Jude Invitational, Harris English had it going well into the weekend. However Sunday he was stricken with the unfortunate fate of playing with Bryson in the final group.

Both players were playing solid golf early on, with matching 33s on the front side. However, late in the front 9, the group was put on the clock for being over a full hole behind the group in front of them.

Rumor has it, it’s tough to win on the PGA Tour, especially during a World Golf Championship against a stacked field.

But add in the intangible factor of playing with the notoriously slow and annoying Bryson, and it has to be damn near impossible. Frankly, it’s impressive that English held onto that lead as long as he did.

“Yeah, we were warned on the front nine. Kind of got behind, felt like we were running pretty much the whole round and never really caught up.”

Harris English

He would go on to hit some loose shots on the backside, doubling both par 3s and bogeying the reachable par 5 16th.

And even after all that, he gave himself a look on 18 to get into a playoff.

After the round, English alluded to being put on the clock and how that definitely affected his performance.

Also, give the man credit for giving an interview after blowing the lead in a WGC with a Ryder Cup spot up for grabs. That’s what a pro does.

He seems like a classy guy and took the high road as expected by not blaming Bryson directly for putting them in that position. We’ll give you one guess who didn’t speak to reporters after the round (yes, it was Bryson…)

But we at Two Inches Short, have no such class. Speed it the fuck up Bryson. Nobody likes you anyway, so don’t make them spend more time with you out there than they need to.

Anyone see it come down?

Cam Smith had a week here at TPC Southwind. On top of his impressive 18 putt round on Friday, he brought his A-game tee to green and found himself right there on Sunday.

He came to the 18th tee in a tie for the lead with three others. He then proceeded to hang his drive well right into the trees, and somehow still in play.

Off a bare, hard-pan-looking lie, he saw a window in the trees and tried to be a hero.

We’re not 100% certain what exact shot he was trying to execute, but he took a pretty full swing at it and it went pretty high in the air.

Before we had a chance to figure out what was happening, Smith’s caddie was pulling another ProV out of the bag and Faldo was expressing his shock with his debatable course management.

Smith would go on to drop, punch out, and get that one up and in for double, which would have been a par if he did that on the first ball. Bet he’d like to have that one back.

Sam Burns the Edge

After a great Sunday at TPC Southwind, we were treated to yet another playoff to determine the victor. This one was between Hideki Matsuyama, Abe Ancer, and Sam Burns.

After they all parred the first playoff hole (18), they were carted back to the tee to play the same hole again – everyone’s favorite playoff sequence.

The three players hit their drives in a similar spot as the first playoff hole. However, this go-around Ancer stuck his approach tight. Then Burns gets up and puts it a few inches inside Ancer’s. Now we’re talking!

After watching Ancer bury his birdie putt, Sam Burns now has a shorter putt on almost the exact same line.

Unfortunately, he started it on the right handlebar of his mustache when he needed to start it on the left handlebar.

It caught the right edge and power lipped out 90 degrees to the left.

And with that, Ancer would become a first-time Tour winner and Burns would undoubtedly lose several hours of sleep.
