Did The USGA Troll Phil Mickelson?
- Updated: February 19, 2020
Phil Mickelson U.S. Open jokes never get old.
On Tuesday, the USGA posted a question on Twitter asking how many of Lefty’s hilarious record 6 runner-up finishes occurred in New York while tagging Phil in the tweet!
It’s 4 😔

Yes, Phil. We all know the answer is 4. But it’s the sad face emoji that really lets the people know how he feels.
For the record, they were 2002 (Bethpage), 2004 (Shinnecock), 2006 (Winged Foot) and 2009 (Bethpage). Sad!
Was the USGA trolling him?
The two alphas haven’t exactly seen eye to eye in the past and their relationship status is complicated.
Whether it be from criticizing the way they can’t set up a golf course, to running and hitting a moving putt so it doesn’t roll off the green, to saying that golf is the only pro sport that’s run by amateurs, to straight-up skipping one for his daughter’s high school graduation.
The good news is the U.S. Open will be at Winged Foot this year, site of one of his second-place finishes back in 2006. The bad news is how he choked it away on the 18th hole and called himself “an idiot.”
The question is, will he get in the field?
This might be Phil’s final chance to capture the career grand slam. All of his major exemptions expired last year.
He’s currently No. 58 in the world and can avoid qualifying by staying in the top 60 after the PGA Championship or on June 15, the final ranking before the U.S. Open is held.
Plus, he’s already shut down all special exemption talk if he doesn’t.
“I don’t want a special exemption,” Mickelson said. “I think I’ll get in the tournament. If I get in, I deserve to be there. If I don’t, I don’t. I don’t want a sympathy spot. If I am good enough to make it and qualify, then I need to earn my spot there.”
Hopefully, he’ll get in. The U.S. Open won’t be the same without Phil in the field, having a chance to win on Sunday, only to blow it down the stretch and finish runner-up, again.
