This Is Why Dustin Johnson’s Monster 489-Yard Drive Won’t Count In The Record Books

Dustin Johnson hit the longest drive in PGA Tour history on Friday at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play, but unfortunately, it won’t count in the record books.

Trailing in his Day 3 match against Kevin Kisner, DJ unleashed an absolute bomb on the par-5 12th hole at Austin Country Club that traveled 489 yards … or more than a 1/4 mile.

He had just 89 yards left for his second shot on a hole that was 578 yards! That’s a flip L-wedge … what?!

But because this was a match play event, not a stroke-play, statistics don’t officially count for some reason.

Kisner still halved the 12th hole with a birdie and won the match. Classic golf.

“He got lucky it hit the road,” said Kevin Kisner according to Golf Channel. “I thought he would make an eagle for sure, he only had 80 yards [to the hole]. He didn’t hit a very good putt.”

DJ went 0-3 this week and didn’t advance to the weekend, but this smashjob was totally worth it.

Davis Love III still holds the record for longest drive on the PGA Tour in the ShotLink era (since 2003) at 476 yards during the 2004 Sentry Tournament of Champions at Kapalua.
