Here’s How Tiger Can Get Back To WORLD NO.1 At The PGA Championship
- Updated: May 11, 2019
Guys, it’s happening. Tiger Woods has a chance to ascend to the top of the World Golf Rankings with a win at next week’s PGA Championship. Granted, he’ll need a little help. But still. This is mind blowing news!
According to a tweet by @GCTigerTracker, the scenario is this: Woods gets to World no.1 if he wins the PGA, Dustin Johnson finishes worse than solo 11th, Justin Rose worse than solo 2nd … and depending on where Brooks finishes this week at the Byron Nelson will determine where he needs to finish next week.

Tiger needs to win and DJ needs to finish worse than solo 11th, Rose worse than solo second. (TBD where Brooks needs to finish based on his finish this week.) @GolfARob
Woods holds the record for most weeks as world no.1 at 683. He also holds the record for most consecutive weeks at 281. He’s held the top spot 11 times in his career with the last time being May 17, 2014.
But as we all know it hasn’t been all rainbows and butterflies for the FIFTEEN-TIME major champion who’s also has 81 career PGA Tour wins (1 behind the all-time leader Sam Snead.) Scandals and injuries almost derailed the greatest golf career of all time.
Take a look at Tiger’s ranking from when he started as an amateur until today. Let’s call that drop starting in 2015 “The Great Depression.”
Some key dates:
- August 29, 1997: Turned pro. Ranked no.433
- June 15, 1997: First time officially ranked no.1
- June 12, 2005 – October 30, 2010: Woods holds the top spot for a record 281 weeks
- November 25, 2017: Lowest recorded world ranking in his career (no.1,199)
- April 13, 2019: Won the Masters. Back to world no.6
Stunning right?! Below is a look at his performance starting with the 2017 Hero when he was ranked no.668. Talk about a comeback!
Again, this was less than 2 years ago. In that time he underwent FUSION BACK SURGERY which no golfer ever came back from to win again.
Meanwhile, Tiger went on to win the 2018 Tour Championship and the 2019 Masters. Not to mention he also finished T6 at the 2018 Open and runner-up at the 2018 PGA Championship. Unbelievable.
If he stays healthy, is only a matter of time before he gets back to world no.1. We are truly #blessed.
