Is This The Most Iconic Sign In Golf History?

9 News DenverThe historical marker at hole four is hard to miss. It reads: “On this exact spot in the afternoon of August 5th, 2017 a marital dispute was won by the husband. At 12:58 he told his wife she shouldn’t drive the golf cart because she is a horrible driver. 5 minutes later, she accidentally drove cart #42 into the lake.” It’s a true story, according to Josh Clay. He’s the facilities maintenance manager at Saddleback. He says a woman convinced her husband to let her tag along as a spectator for a golf tournament over the summer. “She told him, ‘The only reason I came to this golf tournament was to drive the cart,’ and he told her, ‘Well, you’re not a very good driver,’” Clay said. “When she went to hit the brake, she accidentally hit the gas and confirmed her husband’s suspicions that she was not a very good driver.”

When you think of iconic golf course signs and monuments, a few come to mind. There’s Payne Stewart’s statue immortalizing the emphatic celebration when he won the 1999 U.S. Open at Pinehurst. There’s the warning sign at Bethpage Black which is literally not a joke and also the plaque where Hogan hit his famous 1-iron at Merion at the 1950 U.S. Open. There’s even this one found at Trump National in Virginia which may or may not be historically accurate:

However, they pale in comparison to what a Colorado golf course erected earlier this week. Saddleback Golf Club commemorated an extraordinarily rare feat: a husband actually won an argument with his wife … and lived to talk about it!

In a refreshing moment of a good old-fashioned marriage humor, the course placed a sign at the very spot in which the wife drove a golf cart into the lake after her husband told her that she was a “horrible driver.” Bravo!

Few things to note here…first, kudos to the staff at Saddleback for recognizing this rare occasion and designating it as a “historical marker.” Amazing work. Second, congratulations to the guy who stood up to his spouse. The world needs more men like you…

Third (and this is just in case she’s reading), my wife is always right.
