Lexi Thompson can’t catch a break in 2017. Just kidding…she missed a 2-foot putt and is now a million dollars richer. The 22-year-old American who seems like she’s been on the LPGA Tour since she’s been born had a chance to win not only the CME Group Tour Championship on Sunday but the entire Race to the CME Globe (the ladies version of the FedEx Cup) as well as locking Player of the Year honors.
Unfortunately – and hilariously, it was not to be. She pushed the shorty which didn’t even sniff the hole and opened up the door for Ariya Jutanugarn who birdied the final two to earn the W.
Not to add insult to injury but if you recall, earlier this year Thompson had a major (the ANA Inspiration) ripped out of her hands during the final round after a four-shot penalty was enforced out of literally nowhere for not returning her ball back to the same spot after marking it on the 17th hole from THE DAY BEFORE. The decision was so ridiculous that even the USGA was like “wow, that’s bad.” And now, this.
“I don’t really know what happened there. Yeah, it just happens. I guess it’s golf. I guess we all go through situations we don’t like sometimes,” Thompson, who also won the Vare Trophy (lowest scoring average) said after the round.
Yeah…if we just banked close to $3 million in earnings for the year, we’d feel the same way.
