Presidents Cup DRAMA: Cam Smith Not Having Any Of Patrick Reed’s Excuses
- Updated: December 8, 2019
The Presidents Cup just got a little bit spicer after comments made by a couple of International team members regarding Patrick Reed’s latest rules infraction.
Aussie Cam Smith, who’ll be making his Pres Cup debut this week, took Reed to task BIG time for trying to use the camera as an excuse … and even went so far as to use the term “cheat.”
First, let’s flashback to Reed’s comments trying to justify his actions:
“I think with a different camera angle, they would have realized that, if it was from the side you would have seen that with the backswing, it was not improving the lie because it was far enough away from the golf ball.”
Here’s what Smith said according to the Australian Associated Press:
“If you make a mistake maybe once, you could maybe understand but to give a bit of a bulls**t response like the camera angle … that’s pretty up there (inexcusable),”
“I don’t have any sympathy for anyone that cheats. I hope the crowd absolutely gives it to not only him, but everyone (on the American team) next week.”
“I know Pat pretty good and he’s always been nice to me, so I don’t want to say anything bad about him but anyone’s cheating the rules, I’m not up for that,” Smith said.

Yo. Cam Smith of all people went there! Leave it to the 26-year-old pres cup rookie to provide some bulletin board material.
The C-word is the worst name you can call somebody in golf. Of course, we are talking about the term “cheat.” It’s like herpes… once you have it, it follows you everywhere in golf, especially at the pro level.
Golf is a game of honor and integrity (ie. calling penalties on yourself). Once you lose that, it’s tough for anybody not to be skeptical you’re playing by the rules whenever you tee it up.
Aussie Marc Leishman, who’ll be making his 3rd appearance for the International team, was also asked after his round at the Australian Open on Saturday if fans should let Reed have it.
“Pretty ordinary.”

“He’s definitely opened the door there. He’s brought it on himself.” 😅

“There are opportunities there, put it that way. Maybe not shovels [in reference to Reed improving his lie in the sand], but I think he’s definitely opened a door there, that he’s brought on himself.”
“As long as it’s not disrespectful, I think. You never want to cross the line, but I think there is some pretty good ammo there, isn’t there?” Leishman said.
It may not be the Ryder Cup, but things are heating up down under this week. The Presidents Cup takes place December 12-15 at Royal Melbourne Golf Club, Melbourne, Australia.
