Rory: Slow Play Is An ‘Epidemic’ On Tour
- Updated: March 15, 2019
Is slow play an issue on the PGA Tour? Yes. Did one player actually not finish the first round of the Players Championship due to darkness when the weather was perfect? Also yes! Will anything be done about it? Probably not.
Rory McIlroy had some thoughts on the matter when he was asked about it following a 7-under par round 65 which left him tied for the lead after 36 holes at TPC Sawgrass.
As we all know, what Rory lacks in focus on the golf course occasionally, he makes up for in brutal honesty talking to the media.
“The fact that someone didn’t finish yesterday, just being through daylight savings and the tee times and someone had to come out today because there wasn’t enough light to finish, I mean, that’s unacceptable,” said McIlroy.
UNACCEPTABLE!
He played with Phil Mickelson and Matt Kuchar on Friday and completed their round in five hours and 20 minutes … which is roughly the same amount time it takes at the local muni on a Saturday.
“This is [five hours and 40 minutes] after our tee time. I get that it can take five hours to play out there, but it shouldn’t take any over that.”

He’s right. These are the best players in the world, not the C-flight at your club. Do something about it. Right? Nahhh.
“They don’t do anything about it. It’s become somewhat of an epidemic on Tour,” McIlroy said. “Honestly, I think they should just be a little tougher and start penalizing shots earlier and that would be an easy way to fix it.”
Amen, Rory.
