Tony Romo Receives Sponsors Exemption Into PGA Tour Event
- Updated: February 8, 2018
Former NFL quarterback, and certified pretty boy, Tony Romo has officially received a sponsors exemption into the PGA Tour’s Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship. The tournament, which was formally a Web.com Tour event the past two years, will be played opposite to the WGC-Match Play March 22-25.
“As a professional athlete, the love and thrill of competition never entirely leaves you,” Romo said in a press release according to Golf Channel. “Outside of my family and football, golf is one of my greatest passions. So, playing and competing in a PGA Tour event is a dream come true.
“I am grateful to the Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship for giving me an incredible opportunity to test my skills against some of the best on Tour.”
The 37-year-old, who calls football games for CBS better than he used to play it, is a +0.3 handicap and has attempted to qualify for multiple U.S. Opens. Unfortunately, he turned it over in the red zone hasn’t made it to the big show.

Romo follows in another much more popular athlete’s footsteps when NBA superstar Steph Curry played in a Web.com Tour event last year. Curry missed the cut by 11 shots.
“I have no doubt he’ll shoot under par every round out here from where they’re playing from,” said Dallas native and Romo fanboy Jordan Spieth. “He’s really excited for the challenge, and he wants to beat the pros that are in his group. That’s kind of his goal. He thinks he can win this golf tournament if he played it with us.”
Romo will look to tidy up his game when he tees it up this week at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Whether he’ll throw an interception remains to be seen.
