2020 Golf Sadness Match Play

Aerated greens | Two Inches Short

No sports. No Golf. No March Madness. No problem. We created our own match play tournament bracket to determine the BIGGEST problem facing the game of golf today across all professional and amateur ranks. We call it the 2020 Golf Sadness Match Play!

32 issues were seeded and split into 4 regions. All votes were cast via Twitter polls over 5 days, one round per day. In total, over 6,500 votes were cast during tournament play.

The little numbers next to each result are the percentage of votes received for that specific matchup.

Here’s a quick recap of how it played out by region:

Mike Davis Region

The number 1 overall seed Distance Debate easily took care of 32. Youtube swing lessons, while the classic 17. British vs The Open debate fell to the always annoying 16. “Mashed Potato” Guy.

Meanwhile in a major upset, 24. Not fixing ball marks took care of 9. Anchoring. 8. “Just aerated the greens” eliminated 25. PGA Tour “offseason.”

The sweet 16 started off with a pair of shocking upsets as 1. Distance Debate fell to 16. “Mashed potato” guy and 24. Not fixing ball marks took out 8. “just aerated greens.”

In the Elite 8, 24. Not fixing ball marks emerged victorious taking out 16. “Mashed Potato” guy to advance to the Final Four to take on the winner of the Jay Monahan bracket.

Jay Monahan Region

The Jay Monahan bracket featured only one upset in the round of 32 where 20. hitting from a divot knocked out 13. sandbagging. Also advancing on was 5. TV Coverage Stinks, 12. “Cart path only”, and 4. Cost to play.

In the Sweet 16, 5. TV coverage stinks went down to 12. “Cart path only” in an upset, while 4. Cost to play cruised past 20. hitting from a divot.

4. Cost to play easily prevailed over 12. “Cart path only” in the Elite 8 winning the Monahan bracket and reserving its spot in the Final Four.

Slugger White Region

The Slugger White region was ripe with upsets in the round of 32. The biggest was 27. Losing a $5 golf ball over 6. Maintenance costs. The other being 22. knee-high drops taking out 11. Backstopping.

The sweet 16 featured another upset as 27. Losing a $5 golf ball kept it rolling and eliminated 22. knee-high drops.

However, the Cinderella run came to a halt in the Elite 8 when 3. Cheating won handily and advanced to the final four against the Finchem Region.

Tim Finchem Region

The biggest upset in this region was 26. Patrick Reed eliminating 7. Buying a $500 driver. 18. Grandstanding also advanced over 15. narrow vs wide fairway debate.

In the most intriguing Sweet 16 matchup, 27. Patrick Reed upset 10. Cart girl out of beer to get into the Elite 8, while 2. Slow Play steamrolled 18. Grandstanding.

27. Patrick Reed finally met his match against 2. Slow Play.

Final Four

4. Cost to play vs 24. Not fixing ball marks

Matchup breakdown:

Not fixing ball marks is a pet peeve of real golfers and course superintendents everywhere. It’s the proper and respectful thing to do. It’s called having etiquette.

Cost to play has been an issue for years across all levels of the sport. How do you grow the game if people can’t afford to play? What about buying decent equipment that would make it more enjoyable? Unfortunately, it always comes down to money.

MATCH-1 WINNER: 4. COST TO PLAY

2. Slow Play vs 3. Cheating

Matchup breakdown:

Slow play has been plaguing the modern game. Penalties, fines and even shot clocks have been used in an effort to speed it up on the pro tours. Watching pros on TV be “deliberate” doesn’t help either. Nobody wants to spend 7 hours on a golf course when it should only take less than 4.

Cheating is a major no-no in golf. Individual honesty and integrity are the pillars of what makes golf the greatest game on earth, unless you ask Patrick Reed. Nobody wants to be labeled a cheater. It’s worse than being blacklisted.

MATCH-2 WINNER: 2. SLOW PLAY

Championship Match

2. Slow Play vs. 4. Cost to play

The people have spoken and the results are in. The winner of the 2020 Golf Sadness Match Play is …

SLOW PLAY!!!!!!!

Here’s the final bracket with results. Feel free to scroll through. Thank you to all who participated.
