REVIEW: 6 Takeaways From “Feherty Off Tour”

Golf is full of interesting personalities, but one that stands out is none other than David Feherty. The former Tour player turned self-deprecating golf analyst is one of a kind with his Northern Irish accent and sharp wit inside the ropes and out.

His TV show, “Feherty”, on Golf Channel is Emmy-nominated and he’s currently starring in his own one-man production “David Feherty Off Tour” which is ironically touring nationwide.

Fortunately for us, one of his stops was the Paramount Theatre in Denver, Colo. Since we live here, the wife suggested we get tickets, to which I happily obliged as I was planning on telling her we were going even if she didn’t suggest it. (Protip: anytime a date night includes golf and it’s her idea, just go with it.)

Overall, the show was entertaining. Would say it was part stand-up comedy, part NBC telecast. The humor was solid. The stories were everything a golf fan wants to hear. Even my wife enjoyed it.

From talking Tiger and the King to arguably the most stereotypical crowd you’ve ever seen, here are 6 takeaways after spending an evening with David Feherty…

Thankfully, our noses didn’t bleed

1. The crowd

From what we could tell, the primary demo for this audience was not surprisingly Caucasian baby boomers mainly wearing sweater vests and cowboy hats. It was so hilariously stereotypical, the security guy with the metal detector at the entrance was saying out loud “let’s keep it moving, we know you like golf…” He was right.

There were groups of 60-plus-year-old men laughing at every single poop joke (yes there were poop jokes which we’ll get to a little later) like it was the funniest thing they’ve ever heard in their lives. There were also groups of women in their late 50s who were doing the same. It was a scene, man.

These people were probably there

2. The opening joke was strong

Feherty opened the show with a Masters joke that was unlike any other. Here’s the gist. A wife gets her husband tickets to Augusta National. They’re at Amen Corner watching the golf and he says the only thing that would make this better would be doing the dirty on the 12th green.

Low and behold, they go back at night, sneak under the ropes and get it on. As a reminder it’s dark. He goes down on her and says “this is the greatest night ever … I wish I had a flashlight” She says something to the effect of “me too … you’ve been licking the grass for the last 15 minutes.”

Told you … strong.

3. He wouldn’t stop ripping on Faldo and Monty

Feherty was relentless. From the first time he mentioned Nick Faldo’s name, he called him “Dick Dildo” and it continued basically the entire show. The commitment was admirable.

And then there were the Colin Montgomerie jokes. These never get old. From his posture to his weight, to the fact he looks like he’s Ms. Doubtfire (which I always thought the similarities were uncanny but had no idea Feherty takes credit for it). Whenever he had a shot, he took it. It was a thing of beauty.

Dude looks like a lady

4. He told a bunch poop jokes (know your audience!) ????

As mentioned earlier, Feherty was full of poop jokes over the course of the evening and he let them fly at will. Guess what? The audience LOVED it! I mean really, who doesn’t love a good poop joke, but the amount of applause they received from a bunch of senior citizens was astounding!

Naturally, Feherty told the story about the time he ripped a fart live on TV with his mic on and Tiger Woods started cracking up. Here’s the video of the incident:

5. Speaking of Tiger … he’s got incredible admiration for the man

David Feherty joined CBS in 1997, conveniently just as Tiger Woods was introducing himself to the world. As an on-course reporter, he was blessed to walk inside the ropes with a once in a lifetime talent while taking advantage of the best TV ratings the sport had ever seen. He’s also had a front row seat to some of Woods’ greatest shots over his career.

He told the story of one wedge he still remembers to this day that made the usually soft-spoken Ernie Els say into a live mic “F*ck me” on national television. It definitely is worth a listen:

6. He told a borderline unbelievable Arnold Palmer story

After the show, Feherty did some Q&A with the audience and was asked about his favorite Arnie story and this did not disappoint. Apparently, he saw Palmer in a tournament and said he was doing a bit of flirting with the gallery as he normally would do. One thing led to another and a woman caught his attention with a “gesture” of sorts. So Palmer took his 2-iron out of his bag and straight up licked it! The woman nearly fainted. A story like that from the King has got to be true.
