Breakfast Ball: 3 Mulligans From The Rocket Mortgage Classic

Rocket Mortgage Classic 2021 | Two Inches Short Twitter/@detroitnews

Welcome to the Two Inches Short’s Breakfast Ball, where we review and break down what we learned last week on tour. Think of it as the golf edition of Monday Morning Quarterback.

Here are 3 things we learned from the 2021 Rocket Mortgage Classic:

1. Caddie Issues

Bryson once again took center stage in the golf world this past week. But this time he held the spotlight alongside his caddie, Tim Tucker.

After showing up in the practice round together on Wednesday, we learned on Thursday prior to his first-round tee time that Bryson and his caddie Tim Tucker had parted ways.

We were told it was mutual, but it seems to us that Bryson is feeding us the “it’s not you, it’s me” routine.

On top of that, tournament sponsor Rocket Mortgage continued to run a commercial – featuring the defending champion – Bryson and Tucker as a happy team.

CBS had the weekend coverage, meaning the average viewer was subjected to this confusing ad about 8 times per 30 minutes.

Luckily Bryson shot a lackluster 72-71 and missed the cut by 2 shots, putting a temporary end to the confusion among ad inundated CBS viewers.

And after all that, Bryson and Tucker were both sitting on their couch come Saturday and each made the same amount in winnings for the week.

2. “Almost” Bogey Free

After birdieing two of the last three holes to get into a three-way playoff, Joaquin Niemann had not made a bogey for the entire tournament.

This is an incredible feat to us mere mortals who can rarely last an entire hole without a bogey.

Niemann made par on 18 to send it to A PLAYOFF…meaning he was BOGEY FREE FOR 72 HOLES AND STILL DIDN’T WIN!

Reminder: golf is hard

Then on the first playoff hole, he airmailed the green on his approach and buried in the greenside rough.

He couldn’t keep his chip within 40 feet and wound up with his first and only bogey of the tournament, thus eliminating him from the playoff.

Hate to say it Joaquin, but we’ve all been there. Well, maybe not there in the literal sense. But we can all relate to this on some level.

Cruising along without a three-putt or a double all round. Need bogey on 18 to break 80 and boom, three-putt double.

Just gotta sign for that 80 and come out swinging next time.

3. Motor City Muckraking

The Rocket Mortgage Classic was thrilled to have Phil Mickelson as a participant in 2021. Well, through no fault of their own, it may have been his last time there.

Earlier in the week, Detroit News ran a story involving Mickelson. However, it was not the flattering kind that Phil thrives on.

Instead, it was regarding Phil getting cheated out of a gambling debt over 20 years ago by a local bookie with ties to the Detroit mob.

Now I don’t think any of us would be particularly shocked by the news of Phil gambling with sketchy individuals, but it rubbed Phil the wrong way.

In fact, so much so that he said he may not come back to the tournament after this year.

Say what you may about Phil taking out his frustrations on the wrong people, but at the end of the day it’s his decision.

He doesn’t have to play anywhere he doesn’t want to play. It’s one of the perks of being one of the greatest golfers to ever walk the earth.

Maybe Phil comes back next year and maybe he doesn’t, but if this is what it takes to start holding reporters accountable then we all win.

As it stands now according to Phil, it will take 50,000 random acts of kindness to get him back to Detroit…
