WATCH: Euro Tour Pro Plays Bank Shot To Perfection
- Updated: March 24, 2019
Backstopping has been a hot topic on the pro tours, but this is getting out of hand. Check out what happened when eventual winner Scott Hend found himself in a precarious situation in the trees during the third round of the European Tour’s Maybank Championship in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Instead of punching out or risk going
He meant that! Off the backboard.

Amazing creativity from @hendygolf. pic.twitter.com/MNlxGl1BS5
Talk about creativity! He explained his thought process after the round:
Played that way…. 121m to base of grandstand….. play a 140m shot low into the boards and see if it will bounce back…. 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️ seemed to work out ok. My caddie bounced many balls off the stand testing the bounce during practice.

Can you imagine how many shots you’d save if you had grandstands behind the green at your local muni? Bladed wedges 30 yards over the green would be a thing of the past! They’re essentially bowling bumpers of professional golf.
Should it be illegal? Probably. But can you blame Hend? No. His job is to get the ball in the hole in the least number of strokes. There’s no rule against banking it off the grandstands, so why not take advantage of an opportunity.
Hend went on to win the championship in a playoff over Nacho Elvira (who, by the way, has arguably the best name in pro golf.)
