Is Gary Player An Old Man Yelling “Get Off My Lawn!” Or Does He Have A Point?

Who do you think holds the course record at St. Andrews? Nicklaus? Seve? Tiger? Nope. The correct answer is – drum roll please – Ross Fisher! Seriously.

The Englishman set the Old Course on fire on Sunday during the final round of the European Tour’s Dunhill Links Championship when he posted an 11-under-par 61…the best score since the home of golf was founded in 1552!

While records are made to be broken, Gary Player begs to differ on this one. The Black Knight took to social media to provide this scorching hot take regarding today’s technology:

Would Ross Fisher have broken the record with a featherie ball, persimmon woods, or hickory shafts? Probably not…actually definitely not. But according to Player, that’s exactly the problem. Technology has essentially made one of golf’s greatest landmarks obsolete.

Contrary to popular USGA and R&A belief, the ball appears to go farther than ever before, the equipment is more forgiving, and let’s not forget, players are in better physical shape. Mr. Player knows that better than anyone considering he’s more fit at 81 years of age than most guys on Tour.

This isn’t just an old man yelling “get off my lawn,” this is one of the legends of the game making a point…and he’s not the first. Maybe it’s time we start listening…especially when he has dance moves like this!
