Lefty’s Got Jokes: “I Don’t Know If [Tiger] Wants A Piece Of Me”

Tiger Woods Phil Mickelson Smiles

How much would you pay to watch Phil Mickelson go head-to-head against Tiger Woods in a high-stakes, winner-take-all match?

While there are no plans of it happening as of now, Lefty “hinted” he’d be interested in a game during his Tuesday press conference at the Players Championship. However, we imagine it would be like Shell’s Wonderful World of Golf on steroids!

In case you live under a rock and haven’t heard, Woods and Mickelson are paired together this week at TPC Sawgrass along with Rickie Fowler – who said he’s got the “best seat in the house.”

The anticipation is palpable, even for an optimistic veteran who’s won 43 times on the PGA Tour.

“As I look at the cover of the newspaper and the pairing is on there and the excitement that’s been going on around here, it gets me thinking: Why don’t we just bypass all the ancillary stuff of a tournament and just go head-to-head and just have kind of a high-stake, winner-take-all match,” Mickelson joked.

“Now, I don’t know if he wants a piece of me, but I just think it would be something that would be really fun for us to do, and I think there would be a lot of interest in it if we just went straight to the final round.”

It will mark just the 2nd and 3rd times the two living legends have been grouped together at the proverbial 5th major. The first time was in the third round in 2001, a round known best for Woods’ “better than most” putt on the 17th green.

They peg it Thursday at 1:52 p.m. ET off the first tee and at 8:27 a.m. off the 10th tee on Friday.
