NBC’s Johnny Miller To Retire In 2019 … NERVES!
- Updated: October 16, 2018
Johnny Miller has confirmed he’s hanging up his microphone and is retiring from the booth in 2019.
After 29 years as NBC’s lead golf announcer, Miller has become a staple for golf fans giving zero fucks with his outrageous comments and trademark calls like the “chunk and run,” “fall line,” and everyone’s favorite “NERVES!”
By the way, did you know he shot 63 during the final round of the 1973 U.S. Open at Oakmont?!
Miller will make the 2019 Waste Management Phoenix Open his final official event.
Why Phoenix? Here’s what he said according to a Golf Digest report. You can’t make this stuff up…
“It was my idea. I was not going to announce this during the playoff events or the Ryder Cup, because it would have been selfish to do that and take away from those events. I was always known as the ‘Desert Fox.’ My best golf, besides that final round at Oakmont (at the 1973 U.S. Open), came in the desert, especially in 1975 when I won by 14 shots in Phoenix and by nine shots in Tucson. I was playing at a level of golf those two weeks as good or better than I’ve ever seen anyone hit the ball.”
Did you expect anything different?
Although, “sources” say he probably still won’t shut up even after he’s retired.
The Replacements
Golfweek is reporting that FOX’s Paul Azinger will be first in line to replace Miller.
But if that doesn’t work out, here are 3 other guys in no particular order we’d like to see in the booth someday:
- David Feherty – experience, quick wit, Emmy nominated TV show host
- Phil Mickelson – 5-time major winner, professional
insider tradergambler, always optimistic - Brandel Chamblee – perfect hair, is right 100% of the time according to himself, spends too much time in the gym
