Tour Adds Internal OB Because Bryson Can’t Keep His Damn Mouth Shut

The PGA Tour has added internal OB to the 18th hole during this year’s Players Championship. Why? Because of Bryson, obviously.

DeChambeau floated the idea of taking an “alternative route” on the difficult par 4 at TPC Sawgrass which included a 310ish carry into the 9th fairway to a much wider target and leaving a short approach and a better angle to the green. Essentially it would avoid the most difficult part of the hole: finding its designated fairway.

“I’ll probably give it a try, but it’s most likely not going to happen. If there’s stands there, there’s really no reason to go for it, when I could just drive it 100 yards from the green if I get a good wind normally,” DeChambeau indicated. “It’s not really that big of an advantage but taking the water out of play and having an easier second shot, it may be easier.”

Why he said anything in the first place we’ll never know.

On Tuesday of Players week, the tour announced they made left of the lake on 18 internal OB taking the possibility of it happening off the table. It should be noted there’s normally a hospitality tent over there but because of covid…

“In the interest of safety for spectators, volunteers and other personnel, The PLAYERS Championship Rules Committee has installed an internal out of bounds left of the lake for play of hole 18. Similar instances of internal out of bounds for safety purposes have occurred at The Open Championship (No. 9) in 2017, the 2021 Sony Open in Hawaii (Nos. 13, 18), and most recently, the 2021 Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard (No. 6),” the tour said via statement.

Force the tour’s hand after they see what they’ve created.

First of all how ridiculous is it that we are even talking about this?! Second of all, Bryson would be so much cooler if he didn’t announce his plans to destroy one of the tour’s premier courses at its flagship event and just did it. Catch them totally off guard…and then let them make the decision.

It wouldn’t be the first time they banned Bryson from doing something. Remember when he tried putting side saddle and started testing 48″ drivers?

Now we’ll never see it, but we could’ve and that is what’s so damn frustrating.
