What’s Wrong With Rory McIlroy?
- Updated: January 7, 2019
Something is clearly wrong with Rory McIlroy and it’s beginning to worry us. If you were a professional golfer and couldn’t hit a green from 75 yards, you would worry too.
So we’ve been wondering, what’s wrong with Rory?
We hopped on the Rory bandwagon when he introduced himself to the world as wee bit portly, curly-haired Irish kid back in 2007 … and he could flat out play.
His swing was carefree and there was no sense of hesitation ever. He’d bomb it off the tee, stick a wedge – or long iron – to a reasonable distance and drain the putt. You don’t win a U.S. Open by EIGHT shots by accident.

Rory put himself in contention at the Tournament of Champions but again was unable to close the deal posting a pedestrian 1-under 72 during the final round.
The winner, Xander Schauffele, beat him by 10 shots on 18 holes!
Xander played the way Rory used to play on Sundays.
Rory McIlroy has been either 1st or 2nd entering the final round of a PGA Tour event 6 times since the beginning of 2016. He is winless in those events with a final round scoring average of 72.5.

Remember when Rory played in the final round with Tiger during the Tour Championship last year?
Yeah, neither do we.
Of course, there are flashes of brilliance like when he won at Bay Hill in 2018, but there’s no consistency. The only thing consistent is the fact he still can bomb it and led the Tour in driving distance last year. That’s literally it.
Granted there’s only been a few days of competition this year, he’s currently 6th in strokes gained: tee to green which seems good until you realize he’s 159th in strokes gained: around the green! Not great, Bob!
Look at his stats from inside 125 yards thru the Tournament of Champions:
As a professional, he should be ashamed of these numbers. While they aren’t quite amateur numbers, they’re close.
Honestly, this is more mental than physical. It has to be. Otherwise, Rory should consider entering those long drive competitions.
If you have a wedge into almost every hole, maybe take a page out of DJ’s playbook and work on your wedges the rest of the year? Do something to change it, man.

We aren’t mad, we’re just disappointed.
As a fan, it’s frustrating watching one of the best talents of our generation bomb it 330+ off the tee and fall apart inside 125 yards.
Full flight Rory is the best kind of Rory. Hopefully, we will see him again this year.
