Ian Poulter Told He Qualified For The Masters, Then Finds Out He Didn’t

Ian Poulter got the Masters shaft on Saturday when he was originally told he qualified for Augusta in 2 weeks since he advanced to the quarterfinals at this week’s WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play.

However, 10 minutes before his match against Kevin Kisner, Poulter was informed the mathematical projection was incorrect and he, in fact, was not in … but another win would likely cement his place in the field.

Kisner then proceeded to absolutely wax the match play specialist 8&6 at Austin Country Club to get into the semi-finals.

Since he lost in the round of 16, Poulter is now projected to move up to number 51 in the world ranking. Unfortunately, the top-50 automatically qualify for the first major of the year. So close…

“I should never listen to other people,” Poulter said after the L. “When you finish a round of golf and the press and everybody is telling you you’re in the Masters, and then you get a text message 10 minutes before you tee off to correct everybody, to say, ‘Oh, we’ve made a mistake, actually, no, that was wrong, you’re not in. You need to go and win.’

“Not that that’s an excuse in any form or factor, it’s a little disappointing.”

If only the “Medinah putter” he used this week in Austin, the same one he used when he went absolutely ape at the 2012 Ryder Cup, could have done the math correctly.

Ironically, Poulter regained his PGA Tour status last year due to a points discrepancy after he thought he lost it.

Believe that’s called karma.
