Tiger Picks Himself For His Own Presidents Cup Team

Tiger Woods made his 2019 Presidents Cup captain’s picks and to nobody’s surprise, he was one of them. He’ll be joined Patrick Reed, Gary Woodland, and Tony Finau at Royal Melbourne in Australia.

Speaking in third person, Tiger gave himself the nod while rattling off stats justifying the decision. It was spectacular television all live from Tiger’s restaurant, The Woods Jupiter.

“The players, they wanted me to play in the event,” Woods said. “It’s going to be difficult, but I also have three amazing assistants in Fred (Couples), Stricks (Steve Stricker) and Zach (Johnson). So that helps a lot.”

This will be the first time there will be a playing captain since Hale Irwin back in 1994. The thought of TW playing a match with an earpiece in and shouting call of duty commands to his players on different holes warms our hearts.

Automatic qualifiers for the U.S. included Brooks Koepka, Justin Thomas, Dustin Johnson, Matt Kuchar, Xander Schauffele, Webb Simpson, Bryson DeChambeau and Patrick Cantlay.

While Tiger was basically a lock, one pick that certainly raised eyebrows was Patrick Reed. He’s coming off a rough Ryder Cup where he threw teammates under the bus leaving many to question his “Captain America” status. Apparently, his matchplay prowess plus his relationship with Tiger was worthy of a pick.

Couple notables missing from the squad. This is the first time in 24 team events Phil Mickelson will not be on the team. Leave it to Tiger to end that streak! Also, if you told us a few years ago that Rickie Fowler and Jordan Spieth would both be left off a Ryder Cup or Presidents Cup team, we would’ve said you’re nuts. Others that were in the mix that didn’t get the nod were a couple of Kevins, Kisner and Na.

Fun fact: all 4 US captain’s picks are ranked higher than the top-ranked player on the International squad which is Adam Scott at world no. 17. But hey it’s golf. Anything could happen.

“On paper we certainly have the advantage in the world ranking. Our players have earned that by playing well around the world and playing well in big events,” Woods said. “But when we start out on Thursday, it’s 0-0. We’ve got to go out and earn points to win the cup.”

The U.S. Team will try to avenge its only Presidents Cup loss, which happened at the same venue Royal Melbourne back in 2011. This year’s matches will be held on December 12-15.
