Why The Players Will Never Be A Major

Is The Players a Major? No. | Two Inches Short Twitter/@barstoolsports

Is the Players a major? Is this really a question? If you find yourself wondering, stop and ask yourself these questions.

Maybe ask Alexa or Siri or copy and paste this into a google search.

What are golf’s major championships?

After finding out the answer, now ask, is the players one of these events? If the answer is no…well then there’s your answer.

Don’t get me wrong, the Players is an awesome event. As someone who has been to the tournament, I can say it lived up to the hype

When I think about big golf events where I feel like I know the course intimately despite never having played it, only two come to mind. The Masters and The Players.

Why? I’m not sure really. Probably because they are both big events with great fields that have been played at the same venue for their entire existence.

We’ve all watched and got to know the courses on TV, but we aren’t going back in time to retroactively award past Players champions as major winners.

If so, Rickie Fowler, who won it in 2015, is a major champion. We’re sure he’d be thrilled!

Why are we so hell-bent on declaring The Players as the “5th major?”

Because it’s a strong field? If that’s the prerequisite, then where does it end? What else is a major? Are the WGCs majors? The Ryder Cup? Your local muni’s club championship?

I shot 79 the other day and beat my three buddies. Boom, major. 17 more of those and I’m basically Jack Nicklaus

Again, there is no questioning it’s a spectacular event at a golf course that’s as close to perfect as I’ve personally witnessed.

But let’s just let it be that. It’s not a major but has produced some great moments and champions over the years and I’m just fine with that.
